SALT
FORK MUSKIE ATTACK!
By Danny Wade / 2004 Ezine Excerpt
OK......now that I have your undivided attention, I have a true to life
fish story for you.
Dad and I were
trolling down Salt Fork 5/24 about 30 minutes before the thunder storms
hit, minding out own
business and having some trivial conversation about only who knows
what. Either by chance or fate, my
eyes were fixed upon my left side planer board. Almost faster than I
could take my next breath, there
was a big swirl and then a sudden explosion of water as a Muskie
attacked my planer board. The Muskie hit so hard I could actually hear the fish hit
the plastic planer. The fish hit with so much force that it also broke
my line. (I would find out a few minutes later it broke as a result of a
weak spot about 3' above the planer.) Regardless, it was a tremendous
hit. When the line broke it practically rattled the rod right out of
the holder! The instance was over about as quickly as it had happened. I
looked back to see my planer board sitting motionless on the surface as
we motored away. I turned the boat around and recovered the board with
my line still securely attached to the release, along with my lure.
Some of you may have witnessed this before but this was
my first encounter with a Freshwater Shark Attack. These planer boards
put off a lot of agitation in the water as they move along. Mine even
sprout a small rooster tail as they cut through the water. My guess is,
that's what triggered the attack. Makes you wonder if an Ohio Muskie
would actually attack a persons feet or hands splashing in the water. I personally have never seen or heard of it happening
here in Ohio. I'm going to have to get a copy of Muskie Guy's shark
music to play in my boat if this keeps up. Dad suggested
putting hooks on the planer boards! I got to tell you though, I'll never forget that sight
and sound of that Muskie hitting that planer as long as I live.
